ALF BICKNELLS PERSONAL BEATLES DIARY

A DVD presented by ALF BICKNELL . Who? He was the Beatles driver no less and it features his story of his Beatle days - video quality is slightly dodgy but it also includes some 1990s McCartney concert footage too. Alf signed this copy and about 6 months later he died... so probably quite rare.

BEATLES AROUND THE WORLD

Not an Apple release but available in a lot of shops - features the Washington DC concert, 'Around the Beatles' TV show featuring music from various artists including PJ Proby, Millie and the Beatles doing a Shakespere skit, and a rather bad quality Live at the Budokan concert.
I know there are better versions of this Japan concert but its the only one I've got.

YELLOW SUBMARINE

Surprisingly this film now seems to be deleted and going for silly money already. Great to hear the music in 5.1 mix especially if you choose music track only.

IN MY LIFE

George Martin's CD of Beatle cover versions, supposedly the last record he will ever produce.
Quite a strange choice of artists Goldie Hawn, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, Billy Connolly and Sean Connery to name a few.
As you will have spotted this has been autographed - thanks to Dilwyn who went to the record signing at Harrods.

FROM CAVERN TO STAR CLUB

A pretty specialist book - just concentrating on the Polydor releases, i.e. the tracks they did with Tony Sheridan in Germany before they signed to Parlophone. You wouldn't have thought you could do a whole book on that but as it turns out there were many differences in the way the tracks were released and the book comes with an EP of some of the rarer versions of the tracks with an original orange Polydor designed label thrown in too.

THE RUTLES

The Rutles - A legend that will last a lifetime , long after other living legends have died.
Great LP of spoof Beatle tunes created by Neil Innes. My copy of this collectable LP has been signed by 'Ron Nasty' aka Neil Innes himself.

THE GOLDEN BEATLES

Another of those interview records issued 1985. Side one features an interview with the boys, June 6th 1965 in Nassau , Bahamas whilst filming Help, by Wink Martindale (who had a hit with 'Deck of Cards' trivia fans) but my favourite one is on side 2 which is an uncut interview that Kenny Everett did when the Beatles were recording the White Album. Kenny was good friends with the Beatles and its an extremely laid back interview; the Beatles make up some (not very good) 'goodbye' jingles for Kenny. John sings a twisted version of 'Cottonfields'. Lp is very crackley though - wasn't great when I bought it - cheap vinyl. Good artwork..

HELP - GEORGE MARTIN

A good tie-in with the film and Beatles LP - George Martin released an Lp of instrumental versions of the songs from Help -such as Yesterday, Another Girl, The Night Before and Ticket to Ride as well as one of his own compositions 'Bahama Sound' .

The sleeve notes are written by Brian Epstein - which includes this paragraph which now I'm reading it again doesn't really make any sense!!

''In this album of Lennon- McCartney (Harrison) songs Martin brings sympathy and understanding to the understood. He extracts the rest. What the Beatles in their modesty never will. These are songs to live with, says the Martin Sound.''

ABBEY ROAD

Abbey Road in picture disc form with psychadelic cover!

NO ONES GONNA CHANGE OUR WORLD

Its one of those charity LPs -issued for the World Wildlife Fund.
But what makes this collectable is that it features the Beatles - Across the Universe. When this was issued in 1969, this was the only place you could get this track. Whats more, when it was eventually issued on a Beatles Lp, Let It Be - it was a completely different mix, Phil Spector adding strings and slowing the track down - though in fact the track was speeded up for this Lp and bird effects added at the beginning to tie in with the Wild Life theme.
However you can now get this version on the Past Masters Cd which is just as well as this copy of the LP is extremely scratched!
The Lp also features Cilla Black, Rolf Harris, The Hollies, Spike Milligan, The Bee Gees, Lulu, Dave Dee, Dozy Beaky, Mick and Tich, Cliff Richard, Bruce Forsyth, Harry Seacombe. What a mixture!

BEATLES LIVE!

Book which lists all the Beatles live performances collated by recognized Beatles expert, Mark Lewisohn.
I met him in 1988 at got him to autograph my copy.

What makes this book especially collectable is that it came with a flexi-disc which contained a copy of their first ever radio interview which was actually done for hospital radio, at the time of their first release (Love Me Do).

The book is no longer in print.

YESTERDAY

Book published in hardback in 1983. Autographed by Robert Freeman - great book containing some classic images.

TRUE BEGINNINGS

I have quite a few Beatle books in my collection. Here's one of the more collectable ones - True Beginnings written by Roag Best with Pete and Rory Best - Pete Best of course being the Beatle drummer before Ringo - but you knew that or elese you wouldn't be reading this.
This has been autographed by all three on the inside cover.

SGT PEPPER

The most famous Beatle lp of all time here in beautiful Blue vinyl! A French Pressing Catalog DC1 - it was issued around about 1977ish I think -also came in various different colours and came complete with the cut-outs. doesn't include the run-out groove sounds though.

HEAR THE BEATLES TELL ALL

ONe of those Lps issued in the States cashing in on Beatlemania. Contains interviews with the Beatles - but nothing very deep and meaningful! This is a UK re-issue on the Charly record label. I like the graphic design of the cover though.

LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL

Issued in 1977 but never issued officially on CD - vinyl only... probably never re-released as its not really that great a recording - made up from two different nights at the Hollywood bowl and recorded on three track I think it was, so difficult to make it sound any good.

HELP

Up until Revolver, different versions of the LPs were issued in the UK. and USA.
Top we see the UK version and below the gatefold US. version.

This version had less tracks than the UK one but included some of the George Martin instrumentals . This way, they got away with only putting seven new songs on the LP!

YELLOW SUBMARINE

The LP version of YELLOW SUBMARINE SOUNDTRACK in glorious YELLOW VINYL

Beatles Cover Version LP

One of those cheap Lps on the Music for PLeasure label with various stars doing their versions of Beatle hits and Lennon and McCartney tunes.
So we get BAD TO ME - Billy J Kramer, WORLD WITHOUT LOVE - Peter And Gordon HELLO LITTLE GIRL - THE Fourmost, WHEN I'M SIXTY FOUR - Bernard Cribbens, LOVE OF THE LOVED - Cilla Black, MISERY - Kenny Lynch and a few more...

JOHN , PAUL, GEORGE , RINGO AND BERT

Soundtrack to Willie Russell's stage play - covers of Beatles songs and some originals sing by Barbara Dixon.

NOT GUILTY BOOTLEG

One of my Beatles bootlegs - NOT GUILTY.
A lot of these tracks have now been released on Anthology including the title track 'NOT GUILTY' Side 2 is the soundtrack to 'AROUND THE BEATLES' which you can get on DVD now.
However it does include the backing track to RAIN and a different take of the same. But my favourite thing about the bootleg is the back cover! Its a spoof of Rubber Soul ...

Back cover of the NOT GUILTY bootleg including 'USE EXMITE' cleaning material.

And this is the back cover its spoofing - Rubber Soul.

SILVER BEATLES

So here are two versions of an LP called THE COMPLETE SILVER BEATLES (not quite true). In the 1980s the DECCA Audition tapes were released as an LP with the exception of the three Beatle compositions. So can't really be called complete - nor were the Beatles known as THE SILVER BEALTES at the time the tape was recorded. I don't know how long these LPs were available for, but they were for sale in reputable record shops, so not really a bootleg but also far from an official LP.
The picture disc version listed the tracks in the wrong order, which makes it slightly more collectable.
