SGT PEPPER - CD COMPARISON
This is the 1987 first pressing of Sgt Pepper. It came in a plastic case but this was also enclosed in a cardboard outer case which also contained a nice booklet which listed all the characters on the sleeve as well as notes on the making of the album.
The 2009 stereo re-issue comes in a card case and is a triple gatefold. On the left hand gatefold you get a new booklet with extra text and pictures compared to the 87 issue and on the right hand side you get the CD itself.
You can immediately tell the re-issue from the left hand red strip of course.
The new mono issue. As close to the original Lp as possible - double gatefold one half contains the original cut-outs and the second half - the CD.

and track listings (the lyrics are included in the booklet) whilst mono 2009 reissue goes with authenticity and prints the original lyrics as per the original LP. You will need very good eyesight for this!

The new intro to the stereo re-issue by Macca. The rest of the booklet contains adaptations form the 87 issue booklet.
The mono re-issue comes with each CD in its own plastic sleeve but also includes a reproduction of the original inner sleeve!
And the new re-issues reproduce the original labels as the CDs themselves. Above is the mono re-issue - the stereo label is similar though the mono boxset has CDs made in Japan whereas the stereo re-issues say made in the EU. However, that may be just mine - I don't know!!
THE BEATLES IN MONO CD SET
A prized possession. Its the complete Mono collection of the Beatles CDs from the first up to The White Album.
Abbey Road, Yellow Submarine and Let It Be were never issued in mono, hence why they are not included in this set. (OK well Yellow Submarine was put out in mono but it was just a straight mix down of the stereo so its not included)
As you probably know, mono was still the primary way of listening in the 60s so George Martin took a lot more trouble over the mono mix than the stereo mix so its worth having these.
Sgt Pepper is noticably different in places - I can hear extra vocals in the Sgt Pepper reprise for example that aren't in the stereo. 'Lucy' has a phasing efffect not on the stereo too.
The white Album too is different in many places - different bird sound fx on Blackbird, 'Don't Pass Me By' runs at a faster speed - the famous 'I've got blisters on my fingers...' is missing from Helter Skelter, etc etc
And the packaging is lovely - each CD comes in its own plastic wallet and is reproduced like the
original LP -see my next blog entry for comparisons....
Also this box set comes with the Past Masters in mono which contains mono mixes of Yellow Sub. tracks which were going to be issued on an EP in the 60s but never were - so these mixes are unique to this set. These mono re-issues don't have the extra Quicktime movies which are on the stereo versions.
Jigsaw Puzzle
Yellow Submarine puzzle. Oh dear - haven't made it yet but its yet another Yellow Submarine tie-in. Saw on the news today that Disney are to re-make Yellow Sub. in 3D - so look out for more YEllow Submarine stuff in the future!
Beatles Watches
I now own two Beatle watches! Exhibit one comes in a lovely black Beatles box and features the Abbey Road picture.
Exhibit two - a yellow submarine watch - heres the great box - but the watch is resisting attempts to photograph it nicely! It features the four faces of the Beatles anyway as taken from Yellow Sub. Thanks to Debi.

I can't believe I haven't updated this blog since last year. So to make up for it, heres a few new entries. Heres The Radio Times Special on the Beatles in the week that the albums are re-released all digitially re-mastered and sounding good (or so I'm told - haven't bought them yet!)

UNSURPASSED MASTERS vol4
A CD bootleg. Contains 'The Peter Sellers Tape' a tape of differing White Album mixes which Ringo gave to Peter Sellers. Also though contains a lovely alternate version of 'Across the Universe.
Issued on the Yellow Dog label.
LOVE ME DO CD single
30 years after Love Me do was issued on the red parlophone label, and 10 years after it was re-issued as a picture disc - Love Me Do was released in 1992 as a 3 inch and as a 5 inch CD single.
I own the normal size 5 inch CD single.
Tracks are LOVE ME DO/ P.S. I LOVE YOU/ LOVE ME DO (original single version)
famously, there were two versions of LOVE ME DO. The original single version featured Ringo on drums - but was re-recorded a week later with session drummer Andy White on drums and Ringo shaking the tambourine! The original mix was only on initial pressings and was later replaced by the Andy White version.
TV TIMES - 20 years ago today
Dated 30May to 5th June 1987 this is the London edition of the TV Times featuring an article on Sgt Pepper. It was one of the first times I'd seen an explanation of all the faces on the Pepper album (though not all were identified).Later of course you could get this same info in the Sgt Pepper CD.
The programme itself was on from 8-10 on Monday 1st June.

an interview picture disc LP with some not particularly interesting interviews - but the LP is in 3D! Wow man....
More Corgi Toy Buses
Lovely! Issued in 2008 heres the complete new set of Corgi Buses - featuring Sgt Pepper, Help, Revolver and Abbey Road. Nice touches include the bus number is the number of the album issued. The destinations are tracks on the LP. They have also been issued in a limited editon tin which I don't have - plus they've done the same albums in taxi form. I would have preffered it if they had done a different set of albums as taxis.... never mind, still like them.
BEATLES RELATED MUSIC BOXES
At least two companies make Beatle Music in hand held music box form. I've got 'Imagine' 'Yesterday' ,'Yellow Submarine' ,' Hey Jude'. Do you have to pay royalties on music box tunes? I wonder how that works?
