Guardian Guide - Macca

FRom Saturday November 29-Friday December 5th 2008

Macca talks about his new Fireman lp. Great 60s photo!

George Harrison drinking glass

Another car boot purchase, which I assume originally came in a set of four but I only have the George Harrison glass. Not a very good likeness!

Anthology book

A marvellous book - huge and loads of lovely photos. The accompanying book to the TV/DVD series.

UNSURPASSED MASTERS vol4

A CD bootleg. Contains 'The Peter Sellers Tape' a tape of differing White Album mixes which Ringo gave to Peter Sellers. Also though contains a lovely alternate version of 'Across the Universe.

Issued on the Yellow Dog label.

LOVE ME DO CD single

30 years after Love Me do was issued on the red parlophone label, and 10 years after it was re-issued as a picture disc - Love Me Do was released in 1992 as a 3 inch and as a 5 inch CD single.

I own the normal size 5 inch CD single.

Tracks are LOVE ME DO/ P.S. I LOVE YOU/ LOVE ME DO (original single version)

famously, there were two versions of LOVE ME DO. The original single version featured Ringo on drums - but was re-recorded a week later with session drummer Andy White on drums and Ringo shaking the tambourine! The original mix was only on initial pressings and was later replaced by the Andy White version.

TV TIMES - 20 years ago today

Dated 30May to 5th June 1987 this is the London edition of the TV Times featuring an article on Sgt Pepper. It was one of the first times I'd seen an explanation of all the faces on the Pepper album (though not all were identified).
Later of course you could get this same info in the Sgt Pepper CD.

The programme itself was on from 8-10 on Monday 1st June.

BLUE MEANIE

From the Yellow Submarine film.

BEATLES IN 3D

an interview picture disc LP with some not particularly interesting interviews - but the LP is in 3D! Wow man....

More Corgi Toy Buses

Lovely! Issued in 2008 heres the complete new set of Corgi Buses - featuring Sgt Pepper, Help, Revolver and Abbey Road. Nice touches include the bus number is the number of the album issued. The destinations are tracks on the LP. They have also been issued in a limited editon tin which I don't have - plus they've done the same albums in taxi form. I would have preffered it if they had done a different set of albums as taxis.... never mind, still like them.

PLAYING CARDS

Issued in 2004 heres a set of 'Yellow Submarine' playing cards.

BEATLES RELATED MUSIC BOXES

At least two companies make Beatle Music in hand held music box form. I've got 'Imagine' 'Yesterday' ,'Yellow Submarine' ,' Hey Jude'. Do you have to pay royalties on music box tunes? I wonder how that works?

Let It Be UK and US

As mentioned before, when Let It Be was first issued in the UK it came in a box with a book.
This later became a normal LP issue - in the States it came as a gatefold sleeve, with a few pictures from the book on the gatefold. On my copy, The U.S. edition is on inferior cardboard which has worn over the years, whereas the UK edition is on glossy card. The back of the sleeve is different too - with the U.S. edition having one extra thank you and a red apple!

The U.S. inner gatefold sleeve.

Compare the backs of the two issues. The U.S. One had one more thank you???

THE BEATLES BEAT

A German pressing. Has different mixes of some of the tracks - for example 'Thank You Girl' has extra harmonica!

NOTHING IS REAL

An interesting bootleg. Side A traces the development of Strawberry Fields Forever with an Introduction from George Martin then from take one through to an alternate stereo mix of the completed master taking in the orchestra version and band version along the way.
Side B features other outtakes including the full 6.42 version of 'Christmas Time Is Here Again.'

SINGING THE BLUES

More outtakes from the Let It Be sessions. Tracks include - Blue Suede Shoes/ I Me Mine/ Take This Hammer/ Digging My Potatoes/Rock Island Line etc.....
Again not brilliant as they are nowhere near complete songs and just jammed.

NOT FOR SALE

Quite a good looking bootleg. A fewhave now been released legit on CD but amongst the tracks here are DO you Want To Know A Secret (with no echo)/ the Medley from the Around The Beatles TV Special/ Paperback Writer (with no echo)and A Day IN THe Life (remix)

ALMOST GROWN

Vinyl bootleg of some of the session tracks from the Let It Be film. Tracks included Get BAck. Bad Boy/ Sweet Little Sixteen/ Around and ARound/Almost Grown/ Madman/One After 909/All things Must Pass/Across the Universe/That Must Be my Girl/Lit It Be

Not that great as they are not really complete songs....

RARITIES

Issued in the eighties all of these have now been issued on CD. Nevertheless this is a slightly rare version of the LP - it has sampler album written on it and no explanation of the tracks.

The Hamburg Tapes

A double LP of the notorious Hamburg recordings - recorded on a reel-toreel tape recorder with one microphone pointing towards the stage. Successfully stopped from being released officially on CD this was a legit LP issued in the eighties.

BIRTH OF THE BEATLES - THE BEATLES

From The Story Of Rock collection issued in Italy, heres the Beatles editon. No EMI tracks though, one half conisisted of tracks from their Polydor days with Tony Sheridan and side B had live tracks from the Hamburg live tapes.

BEATLES IN ITALY

This is a reprint of an LP issued by EMI Italia originally in the 60s. From the cover people thought it was a live LP - but it wasn't it was a cash-in - all the tracks were normal studio released recordings compiled onto this LP for the Italian market.

ESSENTIAL BEATLES LP

Heres my next car boot purchase. A copy of a compilation Beatles LP on the Apple label called Essential Beatles. Only issued in New Zealand and Australia, this has a import sticker on the back . Its in good condition too. It was the only place you could get a stereo copy of Penny Lane at one time. Also it has 'With A Little Help From My Friends' without the Sgt Pepper lead-in bit.

Beatles Mouse Mat and bits

The weather is good and its car boot time. So a trip down to the local car boot uncovered two Beatle items. Heres the first an unopened pacakage containing a Beatle notepad, mousemat and keyring. Obviously this is new and not worth anything but who knows? Quite a nice thing to have. I knocked them down to a pound by the way.

BEATLES LIVERPOOL PHOTOS FROM 1997

Just got round to scanning in some photos I toolk on a trip to Liverpool back in 1997. Here's some Beatle related ones.

Strawberry Fields Forever

Woolton Village Hall where Paul met John for the first time

The Beatles Shop in Matthew Street

The Beatles Story, Liverpool Docks

heres their official website -

http://www.beatlesstory.com/

"behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout..." The old bus shelter was the Sgt Pepper Bistro in 1997 - pretty sure that's gone now.

Grave in the St Peters Churchyard opposite the village Hall featuring the grave of Eleanor Rigby.

Intersetingly Paul always maintained he'd made the name up - but maybe subconciously he'd seen this grave.

ORIGINAL SHEET MUSIC

Picked these up quite a few years ago. Individual sheet music for I've Got A Feeling, I'm So Tired, and In My Life.

The National Trust Tour

Its possible to visit John's house - Mendips and also Pauls house in Forthlin Road Liverpool. You can't just turn up, you have to book a coach tour courtesy of the National Trust. Its well worth it though, really interesting - not only to see where they lived but also to visit an ordinary house decked out as they were 50 or so years ago. Brought back memories from my childhood too, with details such as the old airer in the kitchen -I remember we used to have one of those - worked on a pulley system!

SKYWRITING BY WORD OF MOUTH

A 1980s collection of John lennon's writings.

THE COMPLETE SET OF 20th ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DISCS

Issued in the 80s, 20 years to the day that the originals were released here is the complete set of UK picture disc singles.
